This week, I want us to focus on noticing how the author uses language. Mark sections in your book that you think are examples of great writing. Write a quote from the book and then explain WHY you chose that passage and why you think it is an example of great writing.
Oh my gosh! Mr. Coleman! It's Lexi.. from 6th grade in Mrs. Mitchell's room... I'm not sure if you remember me, but if you did that's awesome. I'm not completely sure that this is you, but I wanted to try considering you will always be one of my favorite teachers, so anyways, I hope you and your family are doing well. Especially Elli. Hope to talk to you someday soon! I know we all miss you, considering we mention you all the time no joke. Haha, well anyways! Goodbye and hope you have a great new year (although, im a little of) :)
ReplyDelete-Lexi Trafton,
(student 2 years ago.*i cant believe it was that long ago*)
On page 18 there is a great example of Linda Buckley-Archers writing. Example: Kate's hair rose half a yard above her head until it was perfectly vertical. It was just as if she had been hung upside down-except she was the right way up.
ReplyDeleteI thought that was a great part because it showed me that the author writes detailed and funny writing. She also has a simile in there. I could just imagine the whole part. Kates long hair floating up slowly and stickng up straight . And her eyes rolling upward. Thats why i thought it was a good part
Jerry Spinelli uses great language one quote that stood out to me was::The Street Car gasped anD jerked to a halt. within moments it was empty. Even the driver was gone, running with the crowd. And then the streets were empty. a strange music filled the air;The siRens' wail and the thump of exploding shells:: I thought that was cool because i could picture it in my mind and it looked creepy being all alone that young.
ReplyDeleteHe was dragging me, running. He was much bigger. My feet skimmed over the ground. Sirens were screaming. His hair was red. We flew through streets and alleyways. There were thumping noises, like distant thunder. The people we bounced off didn't seem to notice us. The sirens were screaming like babies. At last we plunged into a dark hole.
ReplyDeleteI liked this passage because Jerry Spinelli made me feel like i was there hearing the hearing the sirens and pushing through the people. I liked that feeling that because then i new what the character was feeling. and i remember when i was in a busy crowd and there was loud noises and you never new what was going to happen next.
in the book "Al Capone Does My Shirts" the author describes thing very well there is a quote i found in the book that says this..... "we both look at Natalie her hair is like mine brown and blonde all mixed up like birdseed Different eyes though mine are brown hers are green like the marbles no one wants to trade away" i like that because of the description comment if u think that's good
ReplyDeleteI love the way the author of Al Capone does my shirts uses language in this paragraph, "Natalie's walking behind us with her head down, dragging her left foot on the edge of every step as if she's marking it with her toe. I want to take her hand, but nobody touches natalie." It creates a great picture in my head and it tell's us about Moose and Natalie like maybe how Moose said "Nobody touches Natalie." maybe she doesn't like to be touched and wants everyone to treat her like a regular person. And that tells us the Moose cares about his sister because he wanted to hold her hand.
ReplyDelete- Kat(;
I found some great writing in Al Capone. It was when Moose talked about Natalie and her world.I also thought that Natalie was very into Math when she told Moose Piper and Theresa all those numbers.
ReplyDeletehey mr.coeman
ReplyDeletethe book that i am reading is already great. the way it started just took my breath away because it started out with a boy stealing a loaf of bread and the man that was chasing him when he caught him he got mad but he didnt do anything to him exept break the bread in half and give the boy one half and ate the other piece.and the way the author gives detail and extreme language is when the boy who he meets starts teling him what a jew is and when the author gives great language is when he is always saying exiteing words
sicerely,
jordin
Thats a really great example Alexis i liked that part i thought that was a really great discription
ReplyDeletei love milkweed its halarios i thout it was going to be sad its exiting i love it
ReplyDeleteMr.Coleman i really like how jerry spinelli uses language like how misha plidushki says ''i set it on the back step i took the candles out of my pocket and planted them in the cake i lit the match i knocked on the door and ran'' i really think that says a lot about him becuase i have
ReplyDeletenever seen any one do that.
caelan
i am now obsessed with milkweed because it is drop dead funny.and good luck finding a part in this book that doesnt have drama, action,or the truth in it.but if you wanted a rating between 1 and 10 from me you would get an 11 thats how good this book is.and this is coming from a boy that prety much hates to read.so if you ever get a chance to read it you should.
ReplyDeletei think Jerry Spinelli has a big vocab because of some of the words he uses like i never heard of the word jackboots for nazis. i also like the word babka on page 22. and coming up with the name for stop thief Misha Pilsudski. i really like the begining when it says "i am running. that is the first thing i remeber". it just hooked me because i thougt the nazis were chasing him
ReplyDeletesincerely brandon
the milk weed is good so far but the main
ReplyDeletecharacter stoptheif is a mystery.on page 17-18 I love the way Jerry Spinelli describes the way stoptheif felt when the people were running.quote(I saw someone running. that was all I needed.I could not walk if someone else was running.I broke loose from Uri. others we running race. it was a race!I didn't know where the finish line was, but I was determined to win. I liked that pasge because it was so human I mean it was something I would feel how about you?
i think that jerry spinelli did a great job of how he made the kid like the jackboots!one part that i liked was when spinelli said"he took me to the others" because it reminded me of call of duty black ops.the part that i was thinking that the funny part is when misha pilsubski took the cake and ran with it.
ReplyDeleteHere is a great ex. of great language
ReplyDelete"As Peter concentrated all his efforts on opening his eyelids, a sharp, tweaking pain made him realize that he couldn't them because his eyelashes were firmly stuck together, crusted over with some dried-up gooey stuff."
I think this is a good use of language because you get a really detailed picture of this scene.
Maggie
I like thee way Jerry Spinelli uses language when Misha finds out who he is. I can't believe that Misha threw the bread down and yelled "dirty bread lady!" I chose that passage is because it was really funny. so far in the book Misha has ceased failed to amaze me. As for Uri he is really smart and responsible. i wonder why spinelli wrote about Misha's obsession with buttercream?
ReplyDeleteI like the this discription of the tar man but that's only my opinion
ReplyDelete"The man had a strong and angular nose and black hair that escaped with rats' tails from under a strange triangular hat the thing that caught peters attention above all was a terrible scar,a startling white against his dark weather-beaten skin. the scar snaked down into the man's lower face in the shape of a crescent moon that started above the right eyebrow and reached down to below his jaw. there was something not quite right about his neck, too, for he held his head constantly tiped to one side" "also there was another part at the begining of the page a pungent smell of tobacco smoke and ale have no clue what ale is and stale sweat." i also liked the part in the beginning were he was fighting with his dad because he bailed on him again!!this is the third time!!!!!!!
In gideon I think that part when the Tar Man put a knife in a anti-gravity machine and was partly gone. Is Al Capone good?
ReplyDeleteNo Troy.Al Capone is a criminal and lives in a cell house with all the other bad guys.
ReplyDelete"The girl's turn goes lickety~split and so does the next guy's.I'm up now.I look out at all the strange faces. My arms feel too long.I try crossing them, putting my hands in my pockets, holding one arm with the other. My pants are too tight in the waist and in the crotch. How come I never noticed this before?"
I picked this piece of writting because I thought there was great description and I thought it was funny too.
I really like this book alot better than THE WESTING GAME. And people from GIDEON,have you guys gotten to any action in your book?
like the prot with cement topped with bird turd
ReplyDeletei love milkweed it is such a great book i likeed it when it said that "i want to believe in angels , i think? that alone says alot about misha pilsudski. it says that he is respectful when he is not stealing.and that when he is going over to janinas house he is greatful because he is giving the food because he is doing it because he wants to not because he has to.and he is getting something in return.im just saying i almost cried when i read it thats how awsome this book is.can you top that?
ReplyDeleteHahaha,me too Noah.
ReplyDeleteThe author is very descriptive and puts a lot of effort into her writing and it really pays off because I enjoy this book.
I can't wait to read Al Capone Shines My Shoes!
I was trying to decided if Misha is all good because he brings bread to Janina and coal to the orphans. Or if he is all bad because he has to steal in order to do that. But he does a bad thing for a good reason so he really isn't all good or all bad he has a little bit of both in him.
ReplyDeleteIn Al capone Does my shirts i like the part when gennifer choldenko describes how much moose likes baseball i think that part was really cool cause she didn't make the character say i like baseball but in the text it shows that he likes/plays baseball when he says the bat is lighter then i am used to and "i dont stink at bat but im better in the field" it shows he has experiance
ReplyDeleteI like Moost. Do you like moost
ReplyDeleteI love the way the author uses language in this passage: "How do you do, Annie" i say in my most charming voice. "Hello, Moose" she doesn't look up. "You wouldn't want to play a little ball...would you?" i ask. slowly and delibertately she folds down a corner of her book and closes it. She snatches my extra glove and walks out clear to the basketball hoop. I run up close. I don't want to embarrass her. She's only a girl after all. I pop her one light and easy. She catches it no problem and throws me a fast one." I like this passage because it kinda seems like they like each other a little, and it proves that Annie's the kind of girl who shows off because she shot a fast ball and proved Moose wrong. That girls can do the same as boys.
ReplyDelete-Kat(;
Milkweed is a very good book. There are a lot of good parts in this book. Jerry Spinelli uses great language.
ReplyDelete:: I had never seen him so mad. His hair was redder than ever, only this time he wasn't laughing.::
I thought that was a good piece of writing because i like it how jerry said :: His hair was redder than ever.:: i thought that Jerry does a great job describing people.
this book is great. oh, and how is GIDEON and ALCAPONE going????
I liked the part when Moose describes the teacher.
ReplyDelete"Shes got black, black hair and a tight white little face as if her skin's a size to small."
I like this part because Gennifer does not come out and say "This teacher has a small face she has black hair." Since she did that it makes me think she is very "neat". Also when she talks to Moose and he feels as if his ears were two heaters this leads me to believe she is mean and very on top of stuff.
milkweed is a good book but I want to now his past
ReplyDeletewhy do you think that Misha brought bread to Janina?was it because he was guilty about steeling her cake or because shes a Jew?
ReplyDeleteHaylee there is some sction. But sometimes its slow. But i like that because the action comes up when u dont expect it. its very cool actually.
ReplyDeleteTo the people who are ready Milkweed what is your favorite character and why?
To the people who are ready Al Capone. What is your favorite character and why?
Yes Noah In my time reading the book he had a good influence on me and I grew to really like him.
ReplyDeleteMy book is really good (i am reading Gideon)
Milkweed people i have herd some body talking about Yori person can you give me a picture of this person please
Maggie
Yes Haylee, Gideon is rely cool and I think you will like it if you read it. And I mean is the book Al Capone good?
ReplyDeleteHow are the books doing??
ReplyDeletemines cool
why do you think the docter in milkweed toke misha in to the orfineg?
ReplyDeletei also like who misha trided to get the docter to let the orphans go on the marry go round. caelan
i think its funny and not funny at the same time couse he gets slaped in the face (not funny) . and he gets beer pourd on his head and he stomps on the nazis foot (funny) hahahahahahaha
ReplyDeleteBrianna, Gideon is going going great ! How is Milkweed going for you?
ReplyDeleteI really love the way Linda Buckley Archer describes this part :
"He was on the point of touching her shoulder to wake her when something happened that he could not begin to understand . She begin to be fading or dissolving into thin air." I really love how she describes the way she is fading into thin air !
I also like how she adds pages of Gideon's book : The life and times of Gideon Seymour cutpurse and gentleman,1792. Inside Gideon The Cutpurse book.
then and there i lost my desire to ride the beautiful horses. but not to look. i really like this passage because it stands out to me because i now know how misha feels for the merry go round.
ReplyDeletei also like that becaus i thought he would keep going there but he lost all interest in it.
hey gideon people tell me about the tar man i really want to hear about him if mr. coleman says he is "all that".
Sarai, who's past might you be speaking of?
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah Kat,Moose seemed very charming in that chapter. It reminded me of my cousin. He is charming when he meets someone new then you get to know him and everything changes.
people in Gideon how is Gideon? is it good or is it bad? Milkweed is a good book people.
ReplyDeletesarai why do you like milkweed and why do you want to know about his past?
ReplyDeleteMilkweed,
ReplyDeleteA great book, it is making its way to one of my favorites. As Lydia said, "I was trying to decided if Misha is all good because he brings bread to Janina and coal to the orphans. Or if he is all bad because he has to steal in order to do that. But he does a bad thing for a good reason so he really isn't all good or all bad he has a little bit of both in him."
I totally agree with Lydia. He may act nice but he has to steal to get the stuff. Think about it, you can barley get a enough food for the hole town and he is going and acting like it is all his. Some are starving and he is giving it out. Good guy with bad purpose.
i like the part in chapter 4 when peter yodels for help. i just didn't understand why he did that. but it was cool.
ReplyDeletewhat is wrong with Natalie.
ReplyDeleteNatalie is 16. I did not now it.
ReplyDeleteI think this part is really amazin and awesome it is talking about rain...."The entire month of February and half of March, it rains.Drizzling rain, driving rain, lightning storms and thunder.Big fat sloppy drops, little misty ones and the kind that sting when they come down." When i read that i was like whoa that is......AMAZIN! i give that a.....100% Kaity
ReplyDeletein Al Capone Dose My shirts i thought about what Moose is gunna do when his sister has mentle issues and what his mom and dad gunna do to and i loved how gennifer choldenko described that scene that is talking about rain it felt like i was in the book and feeling the rain coming down
